Background

George F. Franks, III
, the founder and owner of CockedHats.com has been creating cocked hats and other styles for himself and friends for nearly 40 years.  Our customers belong to living history organizations, work for historical sites and also recreate famous period personalities.  Additionally, we have crafted hats for museums, theater companies, dance troupes, color guards and re-created martial music organizations.  For the past several years a leading impersonators of General Washington has chosen to wear one of our cocked hats to cross the Delaware River on Christmas Day in addition to appearances on televison and other media.

George has been what is now known as a "living historian" since 1964 having recreated every period from the French and Indian War through World War II.   He began recreating the Civil War with the North-South Skirmish Association (N-SSA) near the end of the Civil War Centennial.

George went on to become a founding member of the 60th Foot, Royal American Regiment at the Fort Pitt Museum.  The coming Bicentennial led to his membership with several units in the Brigade of the American Revolution (B.A.R.).  George's research focus is on uniforms and clothing of the eighteenth century in North America.

He is a member of the Brigade of the American Revolution, The Company of Military Historians, Continental Line, Gettysburg Discussion Group, Save Historic Antietam, Hagerstown Civil War Round Table, Society of American Bayonet Collectors plus other living history, preservation and military history organizations.
